Sept 2007 – March 2008
GIRLS NOT ALLOWED is a short documentary made by a group of year 9 girls from Plashet School in East London collaborating with Katie Lincoln (Film Maker). The all girl crew set out to make a film about something that meant a lot to them: how boys their age get so much more freedom than girls do.
The Adobe Youth Voices project started in September when the group watched the powerful documentary Every good Marriage Beings with Tears which reflected issues that were familiar to them as Muslim girls growing up in East London. The film challenged their preconceptions about the documentary form in general and there was plenty of healthy debate before the group finally settled on the story they wanted to tell. Eventually they decided to investigate something that they all felt strongly about. The first day of filming took place at Shamilas house and she was interviewed with her Mum who spoke about how little freedom she had as a girl.
The final film, ‘Girls Not Allowed’ was premiered at the British Museum in March. Before showing the film, students spoke about the challenges they encountered making the documentary. The film was received extremely well and will be shown again at the British Film Institute in the Summer.
Many thanks to Ashia, Emma-Jane, Chris, Chloe, Mary, Lynne, Miguel and everyone who supported this project.
